Campi Flegrei

The area of the Campi Flegrei,  of great importance for their history and art, for some takes its name from the Latin Name "phlegraie", for others from the Greek "phlegraios" and includes the territory from the Camaldoli hills to Cumae and Miseno.
A part of tradition affirms that this name was given to these fields by the Greeks, who told that in this site a battle happened between  the giants who wanted to reach Olympus; other historicians affirm that the first Aegean seamen gave the name "phlegraios" to the area, impressed by the  volcanic activity of the site.
Strongly subjected to the phenomenon of bradyseism and thermalism ,  the area offers a particular and varied landscape due to the presence of extinct craters and many beautiful lakes in the midst of several hills.
The very fertile and sunny land of the Campi Flegrei offers natural and easy landing places; due to its mild climate during the whole year and the fascination of its coast,  it became the home of primitive and mythical populations.
In fact the particular volcanic soil allowed the vines in this zone to resist the aggression of the vine louse, a terrible insect which for decades attacked the roots and plants in Europe and compromised their growth; the grapes and the vines of the Campi Flegrei are in fact of very fine quality since ancient times.
Worth to see are: the Astroni park; the Solfatara volcan; the Temple of Serapide; Lake Averno; The temple of Apollo; the temple of Augustus,  the temple of Neptune; The Monte Nuovo and the Arco Felice.
Baia,  landing place of the more important Cumae,  was for many years the most praised and visited phlegrean site,  because of the beauty of its surroundings or for the famous thermal sources,  so loved by Horace.
